Frequently Asked
Questions
Q: What is our typical student
profile?
A: The Joy School serves
students with average to above average academic
potential who for a variety of reasons are not meeting
their potential in a traditional classroom. Some of the
most common labels that our students come to us with
are: dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD,
auditory processing disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome and
expressive or receptive language disorders. We also
serve many children who do not have specific labels, but
have been struggling due to organizational, spatial,
attentional or social issues. Our focus is on serving
the social and academic needs of children with learning
differences, and therefore we are not equipped to serve
students with significant behavioral or emotional
issues.
Q: What is my first step in
getting into The Joy School?
A: The best way to start the
process is to gather information on our school and
determine if we are a good fit for your child and family
by attending a
parent tour. Detailed information on our entire
admissions process is available on the
website.
Q: When do you make admissions
decisions?
A: Most enrollment offers are
made by late March. However, applications are processed
until all spaces are filled, which may be anytime during
the year.
Q: Do you have financial aid?
A: The Joy School is
committed to making our school and its programs
accessible to families at all income levels. The Joy
School annually awards needs-based grants, which do not
need to be repaid, to bridge the gap between what a
family can afford and the cost of tuition. The Board of
Trustees is committed to reserving 10% of each annual
budget to funding this program. Historically,
approximately 15% of our students receive some level of
financial aid each year.
Q: Are there any openings for the
current school year?
A: Unfortunately, there are
no openings for the current school year. However, it is
never too early to begin the process for next year, and
we encourage all interested families to submit an
application as soon as possible. In the event of an
unexpected opening mid-year, all applications will be
reviewed to find a match for that space.
Q: What is your nondiscriminatory
policy?
A: The
Joy School admits students of any race, color, national
and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges,
programs, and activities generally accorded or made
available to students at the school. It does not
discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national and
ethnic origin in administration of its educational
policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan
programs, and athletic and other school-administered
programs. |
