Middle School Boys Spread Joy to 5-Year-Old Victim of Sutherland Springs Tragedy
When Ms. Sorensen's seventh graders learned about 5-year-old Ryland Ward, they knew they wanted to help brighten his holiday. Ryland was shot five times at the Sutherland Springs shooting in December, and also lost his mother and two siblings in the tragedy. While in the hospital, Ryland's family put out a call for Christmas cards with one dollar in them to both bring cheer to Ryland and in hopes of buying him a go-kart.
"I think that Ryland Ward is a very fortunate five-year old who has a big heart. I think that Ryland is the definition of humble. Surviving five gun shots, and then asking for nothing but Christmas cards to decorate his room," said Alex, a seventh grader.
Here are Ms. Sorensen's students holding their cards. Below is a card decorated just for Ryland, featuring a go-kart.
