OUR STUDENTS
At The Joy School, we meet kids where they are, help them grow by strengthening what we can, and equip them with strategies to navigate the rest.
The Joy School specializes in helping students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, expressive or receptive language disorder, social pragmatic disorder, anxiety disorder, Level 1 autism spectrum disorder, or executive functioning challenges.
At The Joy School, a diagnosis is only a starting point and does not dictate a child’s placement or plan. Instead, we take a holistic approach in strategically analyzing a child’s profile to determine what is needed as well as what is not needed. This allows students to get the support they need for areas of difficulty while continuing to excel in areas of strength.
Our approach is not about modifying expectations or simply providing accommodations. It is about delivering evidence-based intervention and targeted instruction that results in real, permanent change. Our goal is not to keep students long term—it is to give them the skills, strategies, and sense of self they need to return to traditional school settings prepared and empowered to be independent learners.
Surviving or Thriving:
Perhaps the most important question to ask when considering any school for your children is “Will my child survive at this school, or thrive at this school?” In other words, “how sustainable is our current situation?”
Students may fulfill the requirements of their classes, but they have to work harder and for more hours than their peers – getting pulled from classes and recess.
Is Your Child Surviving or Thriving?
- Is your child doing the work but not really understanding the content?
- Are your evenings planned around homework rather than family time?
- Has your child missed out on extracurricular activities because tutoring has to take priority?
- Does your child seem to be working harder and longer hours than peers?
- Can tutoring effectively address gaps in your child’s knowledge, or do the pressures of homework and studying take precedent?
- Does it feel like the pace of instruction is just too fast for your child to truly master the content?
- Does homework frequently involve tears—your child’s and/or your own?!
When students come to The Joy School, they get the support they need, meet other kids just like them, and discover strengths that might be overshadowed by their learning differences.
While they may have been “OK” at their previous school, students at The Joy School get the academic help they need during the school day and therefore have time and energy to focus on outside interests---or just be a kid!
