Lower School

Our Skill Builders Program is now currently full. To be placed in our waitpool, please contact Joann Black with your child's name, grade, and current school.

Our students find the JOY in learning through direct, purposeful instruction in a safe, supportive environment with peers who share similar needs.

Students learn to celebrate their areas of strength while gaining skills and strategies to support their areas of weakness. They return to their schools with a renewed sense of confidence and a stronger understanding of themselves as learners.

Social Program

Socially Savvy

1st – 5th grade
(as of spring 2019)
$585
June 4th – 27th
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3:15-5:15

Socially Savvy is designed to give children an opportunity to learn and develop appropriate social cognitive and executive function skills in a small group setting. Students are grouped by age, grade level and their abilities. Classes will focus on conversational turn taking, social problem solving, perspective taking, empathy and much more.

Our Students

The Joy School summer programs are open to all students with learning differences in the Greater Houston area.

The Joy School believes in building upon areas of weakness while celebrating areas of strength. Therefore, all students will participate in all academic areas.

If you would prefer for your child to only focus on one academic area, private tutoring may be a better option.

Our Teachers

Skill Builders classes are taught by highly trained Joy School Learning Specialists. Our Speech-Language Pathologists teach all of The Joy School social programs. Our instructors' experience throughout the school year and their intensive training provide them with the tools required to meet a range of student needs.

Our teachers embrace and appreciate students who learn differently.

Admissions & Placement

Admissions

Admissions decisions are based on our belief that we can provide meaningful instruction to address a child's particular needs.

This decision will be based on testing reports, parent descriptions and teacher recommendation forms submitted during the application process. Some students may be asked to participate in a brief interview session to ensure that we fully understand their needs.

Placement

In general, students will be grouped based on a combination of factors, including chronological age, current developmental level and current school placement. Class sizes average six students per teacher depending on the needs of the students. All curriculum planning decisions will be based on the needs of the students within each group.

Getting Kids Excited About Summer School

This is a common question asked by parents! The name "The Joy School" embodies what we try to provide for all students every day: joy in learning. Yes, we work hard, and we have fun doing it!

Program participants and their parents have told us that attending summer programs at TJS doesn't feel like school.

Some kids say they learn more during our four-week program than they do the entire year at their current school.

We believe the difference is having teachers who embrace and appreciate students who learn differently and classmates who share similar needs.

Students find acceptance, gain confidence and realize they are not alone when they work alongside others who also need extra support.

Extracurricular Activities

Although our summer programs are intensive, we believe that coming to school should be a fun, exciting and JOYFUL experience!
